What is a HeatPack?

A HeatPack is a small, portable packet that generates heat over a set period (often 24, 40, or 72 hours). It is commonly used to regulate temperature during the shipment of sensitive items, such as:

  • Plants: To prevent them from freezing during winter shipping.
  • Live animals: For shipping pets, reptiles, or other animals that require a warm environment.
  • Perishable goods: Like certain food items or pharmaceuticals that need a temperature-controlled environment.

How Do HeatPacks Work?

Heat packs usually operate through a chemical reaction or an exothermic process, where substances inside the pack react with oxygen, causing them to heat up. Some common types of heat packs include:

  • Iron-based heat packs: These packs typically contain iron powder, salt, and other materials. When activated (often by shaking the pack or opening the seal), the iron oxidizes and generates heat.
  • Calcium chloride or other chemical reactions: Some heat packs use calcium chloride, which, when mixed with water, produces an exothermic reaction that creates heat.
  • Activated carbon: Another common component used in some heat packs that can help regulate the temperature for extended periods.

    Temperature Range and Duration

    • The heat generated by these packs typically ranges from 37°C to 60°C, depending on the specific pack.
    • Duration: The typical duration is 24, 40, or 72 hours, but you can find longer-lasting heat packs for more extended shipping durations. The pack’s duration and heat output depend on the type and size of the pack.

How Are Heat Packs Used in Shipping?

    • Preparation: Before shipping, the heat pack is activated. Depending on the product, it might be shaken, opened, or otherwise prepared to start the chemical reaction that produces heat.
    • Packaging: The heat pack is then placed inside the shipping box, often with the items being shipped (like plants or animals). It's important to ensure that the heat pack doesn't come into direct contact with the items in a way that could cause overheating or harm. There may also be insulation or other materials used to keep the heat concentrated and protect the items from temperature fluctuations.
    • Timing: Heat packs are designed to last for a set period, but they must be timed according to the shipping duration to ensure that they will still be effective at the end of the journey.
