PLATYCERIUM

Platycerium is a tropical epiphytic fern, parasitic on trees in humid and warm areas of rainforests, especially in China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia... In Europe, Platycerium is most often grown as an overhanging houseplant.

Platycerium is distinguished by two types of leaf - known as strong heterophyly - sterile leaves (infertile) and fertile leaves (fertile). At first, the infertile leaves grow, they are round and without distinct cuts, pressed close to the base. These leaves are gradually renewed, the old leaves dry up with the time and new greens grow on them. Fertile leaves grow upright or overhanging, are firm and branch out with age. The surface of the leaf is covered with hairs, which prevents it from drying out quickly on hot days.
